Our Projects

Igbo Women League of Minnesota has continued to carry out its mission and objectives through the following projects:

Igbo Youth Mentoring and Leadership Program- This is the third year of the program designed to inculcate in our bi-cultural children a sense of identity and pride in their native Igbo culture by teaching key aspects of the culture with the hope of developing in them respect for self and others, leadership by service, responsibility to the community, and the nation as a whole.  We pursue these goals through mentoring; field trips; various classroom activities; teaching the Igbo language; singing; dancing; drumming; preparing and cooking ethnic foods; and other cultural activities.  We will continue to help our children build self-esteem and self-sufficiency, while helping them overcome academic, social, and cultural barriers to success.

Scholarships for Disadvantaged Female Students in Nigeria- For several years IWL has offered these scholarships for the educational advancement of female students from low-income families in Nigeria. The scholarship funds cover educational costs from junior high through senior high school.  The recipients of these scholarships would otherwise not have been able to obtain secondary education as a result of poverty.  This is a project that is very dear to our hearts because we realize how important education is and its ability to lift people out of poverty. We are pleased to announce that three recipients have graduated from high school and at least one of them has since gone to College.  Angela Nzediegwu will be the first member of her extended family to receive college education. IWL currently offer scholarships to sixteen students.

Motherless Babies’ Homes in Nigeria- This is the ninth year that IWL has funded orphanages.  These orphanages abound in Igboland and other parts of Nigeria due to the high mortality rate of women of child-bearing age.   IWL recognizes how precious children are and know that our support of these orphanages go a very long way in sustaining the children.   (Add pictures)

Homeless SheltersThis is the third year that IWL has partnered with St. Peter Claver Catholic Church to run its annual homeless shelter program in St. Paul, Minnesota.  Each year IWL members volunteer many hours to support the homeless.  By giving back to our community, we continue to lead by example and act as role models to our children.  It is our hope that our children will carry on the legacy of respect for self and other less fortunate members of the community.
