Youth Mentoring and Leadership Program (YMLP)

The Youth Mentoring and Leadership Program for Children of African Descent (YMLP), a project of Igbo Women League of Minnesota, is designed to inculcate in our bicultural immigrant children a sense of identity and pride in their native culture by teaching key aspects of the culture with the hope of developing in them respect for self and others, leadership by service, responsibility to the community, and the nation as a whole.
IWL needs your support to continue this impactful work with Igbo children and youth.

Scholarships for Less Privileged

Our scholarship program initiative pays for secondary and tertiary education for girls from low-income families, especially in Nigeria. From scholarships, in-class teaching and mentorship, to hands-on learning and trade workshops, we have provided ninety nine (99) girls with the education and necessary skills that girl-child needs to excel in their careers and life.
We recognize the challenges facing the education of the girl-child in Africa. But with financial support from our donors,  IWL will be able to continue to sponsor more girls, who would not otherwise go to school. Educated girls become educated wives and mothers who, in turn, make our families stronger. Your financial support will continue to strengthen families and future generations.

Community Outreach and Services

Our community outreach program aims to help underprivileged communities get the resources they need. We work with local officials, businesses and organizations to address the situations and issues that are impacting communities the most and help put long-term solutions in place.

Furthermore, For the last four years, IWL has been fighting to keep our communities safe from COVID-19. We continue to partner with Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), Hennepin County, and others to provide Covid-19 vaccines and testing, community outreach and education that addresses vaccine hesitancy, mental health and immigration. Since our award of the MDH Community Engagement grant in 2021, we have expanded and is currently recognized as a trusted COVID Community Coordinator by MDH. Various communities (especially Blacks and Faith Communities) see us as a trusted source of Covid -19 information and resources.

Our collaborations primarily draw on the strengths and assets of our communities to help eliminate health disparities and achieve expanded access for racial and ethnic minorities.

Motherless Babies' Home Support

It's hard for many of us to imagine not having a parent to care for one on a daily basis. However, millions of orphans are stuck with fending for themselves on the streets with no help. IWL is committed to helping alleviate this problem and currently support 9 dedicated motherless babies home, but have equipped and supported over 12 homes in general.

This is the tenth year that IWL has funded orphanages. These orphanages abound in Igboland and other parts of Nigeria due to the high mortality rate of women of child-bearing age. IWL recognizes how precious children are and know that our support of these orphanages go a very long way in sustaining the children

With your help, we can continue to bring life-saving initiatives that will help give housing and food so these children can thrive, not just in Nigeria but in communities all across the globe.
