Youth Mentoring and Leadership Program (YMLP)

The Youth Mentoring and Leadership Program for Children of African Descent (YMLP), a project of Igbo Women League of Minnesota, is designed to inculcate in our bicultural immigrant children a sense of identity and pride in their native culture by teaching key aspects of the culture with the hope of developing in them respect for self and others, leadership by service, responsibility to the community, and the nation as a whole.

These goals are attained through mentoring, field trips, various classroom activities, teaching the Igbo language, singing, dancing, drumming, preparing and cooking ethnic foods as well as other cultural activities like "Egwu Onwa" (Egwu Onwa is a rich cultural heritage of the Igbo tribe enjoyed by many generations. It’s a moonlight activity where children come together with elders and sit in groups to engage in beautiful moonlight tales. Our children play moonlight games, play traditional drums and fetch water as an immersive cultural experience).

IWL will continue to help children build self-esteem and self-sufficiency while helping them overcome academic, social, and cultural barriers to success.
